The ongoing investigation into corruption-ridden flood control projects has apparently spooked contractors of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), even those who are not involved in any way, shape or form in similar undertakings.
As a result, infrastructure projects have apparently been stuck in limbo, with no sign of being unstuck soon, as the new public works chief has begun his own campaign to clean up the agency.

Biz Buzz learned that the probe on the widespread irregularities in flood projects has prompted other contractors to stop or partially halt their operations.
This, as they feel the need to preserve funds since receivables from the DPWH have been steadily mounting, and they do not know when they will get paid.
Playing it safe, some banks are also said to have put the brakes on new loan releases linked to flood control projects until the fluid situation stabilizes. New DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon has launched a cleanup drive in the agency and has ordered all officials, down to the district level, to submit their courtesy resignations.
Dizon, who also led the transportation department, said the move was in response to President Marcos’ mandate to “clean up the DPWH.”
“There would be no such projects if there were no accomplices inside the DPWH…,” he said at a Palace briefing.

Apeco rides on tourism wave
Craving a break from the hustle and bustle of city life? If yes, then you may want to check out the new tourist sites in Casiguran, Aurora, opening this month.
The Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (Apeco) has announced the reopening of its tourism properties in a bid to help revitalize the Philippine tourism sector.
These properties, which include 20-hotel room Apeco Residences, seven two-bedroom Apeco Executive Villas and a three-bedroom Apeco Executive Kubo (Nipa House), showcase the natural beauty of the Sierra Madre and Casiguran Cove.
“The newly renovated tourism properties inside the ecozone will not only serve visitors but also create opportunities for our local communities and strengthen Aurora’s position as a rising destination in the Pacific corridor,” Apeco President and CEO Gil Taway IV said.
The ecozone said the reopening of these facilities was also part of the ecozone’s broader vision to promote the Dinalungan, Casiguran, Dilasag (DiCaDi) corridor as a tourism destination.
By booking accommodations in the newly renovated facilities, both local and foreign visitors can explore the natural attractions in Northern Aurora, such as Casapsapan Beach, Tibu Tidal Pool, Motiong Beach, Dalugan Beach, Ontok Lighthouse and Dialang Falls.
They can also visit the 419-year-old Ermita Church in Casiguran, among the oldest churches in the country.
